I Am Not Ashamed of My Communist Past //

Theater-maker Sanja Mitrovic and actor Vladimir Aleksic grew up in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Now, new states with different names and different stories have taken its place. But what do values such as solidarity, social justice or public spirit still mean to us today?

In «I Am Not Ashamed of My Communist Past» both artists look back on their childhood and youth in Yugoslavia of the '80s - by means of a huge pool of films from the formerly internationally renowned Yugoslav cinema. Here they find a visual expression of what shaped people's values, attitudes and perceptions back then: the antifascist resistance, the welfare state and the sense for community, but also nationalist wars, the post-socialist radical changes and finally the economic decline. With intellectual sophistication and playful ease they interweave screen and stage into a touching personal retrospective on European history, which is not only their own.
