The Master Singers of Nuremberg //

Co-production with the Theater Erfurt

Eva, the daughter of master singer Pogner, wishes for nothing more than to be allowed to marry Walther von Stolzing. Her father, however, has promised his daughter’s hand to the man who wins the master singer contest. A daunting challenge for Stolzing, who is not familiar with the complex rules of master-singing. Stolzing relies on the assistance of the cobbler Hans Sachs to learn these rules, especially when his soul is overcome with emotion and his natural expression disqualifies him. Stolzing’s competitor is Beckmesser, who, despite having mastered the rules, has nothing to say.

In the »Master Singers of Nuremberg«, Wagner offers us a view of a perfect society. The opera presents a community which solves its problems with art, which makes laws and is prepared to change them if anyone sees their personal freedom restricted. Wagner portrays the character Hans Sachs as an artist-politician who can mediate between the human desire for freedom and society’s need for conventions.

Director Vera Nemirova, who presented Richard Strauss’ »Knight of the Roses« in Weimar in 2014, has become one of the best-known Wagner directors in recent years. Her highly acclaimed productions include »Tristan and Isolde« in Bonn, »Lohengrin« in Basel and »Tannhäuser« and »The Ring of the Nibelung« at the Opernhaus in Frankfurt/Main. She works at a number of well-known venues, e.g. the Vienna Staatsoper, the Staatsoper Berlin, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Semperoper Dresden and the Salzburg Festival.

Following five performances at the Theater Erfurt, Wagner’s »national opera« will premiere in Weimar together with the Staatskapelle, conducted by General Music Director Kirill Karabits.
