Tosca

by Giacomo Puccini

Musical drama in three acts by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa based on the piece by Victorien Sardou
in Italian with German subtitles

Love, desire, power. Three characters interweave in various constellations and ultimately collide in a tragic ending. The singer Floria Tosca and the painter Mario Cavaradossi are lovers. But when Cavaradossi paints a portrait of Mary Magdalene with the eyes of another - the eyes of the Marchesa Attavanti - Tosca is thrown into a fit of jealousy.
Baron Scarpia, who governs Rome like a despot, accuses Cavaradossi of plotting revolutionary intrigues. He also wants Tosca for himself. He takes advantage of her jealousy to secure the arrest of Cavaradossi and eliminate his political enemy. But Tosca negotiates a deal - she promises to sleep with Scarpia if he frees Cavaradossi in return. The catastrophe runs its course …
In this intricately woven, psychologically thrilling masterpiece, Puccini illuminates the mechanisms of power in religion, politics and sexuality. In fact, he applies various film techniques long before the development of cinematography, such as superimposing, fading and fast cuts which help accelerate the story and heighten the tension.
With Floria Tosca, who represents the fiercely loyal lover, but also the shrewd professional singer, Puccini portrays an ideal of a woman who could slip into the role of a femme fragile or femme fatale at will.
The new production of this opera classic will be staged by our general theatre director Hasko Weber, who continues his work with the repertoire of music theatre following last season's production of »Fidelio«.

(…) Phänomenal, diese «Tosca»«
Bayerischer Rundfunk, 10.03.2019, Peter Jungblut

(…) Puccini perfekt!«
NMZ Neue Musikzeitung, 11.03.2019, Roland H. Dippel
