Face Me – Le Sacre du printemps

Dance theatre by Ester Ambrosino · World premiere

Music by Michael Krause and Igor Stravinsky

The virtual world is a continuously expanding landscape of products and services. How do we use these possibilities and take advantage of the freedoms they offer? In our interactions with this world, are we self-determined designers or rather manipulated pawns? »Face Me« blurs the boundaries of the real-world and media-generated reality. In the first half of this two-part performance, the electronic music by Michael Krause and 3D projections by Dirk Rauscher merge to create a visual and acoustic maelstrom with which a dancer is confronted.

At its world premiere in 1913 »Le Sacre du printemps« (Rite of Spring) presented unprecedented aesthetic views that provoked an outcry by audiences and critics alike. Tightly interwoven motifs and thrilling rhythms allow the audience to almost physically partake in a young girl’s rite of spring, during which she dances herself to death. More than 100 years later, the phenomenon  of self-sacrifice is still relevant – in our everyday private lives, as well as in social and religious contexts.

In staging Stravinsky’s ballet with a large dance ensemble, Ester Ambrosino take the step from the individual in »Face Me« to the group in »Sacre« – from the willingness to sacrifice oneself to the desire to exact sacrifice from others. Following the last season’s production of »Reprise«, Ambrosino now presents her second choreographic work as part of the project TanzWert.
