Felix Weingartner Ouvertüre zu »Der Sturm« op. 65 Nr. 2
Avner Dorman Konzert für Mandoline und Orchester (2006)
Gustav Mahler Sinfonie Nr. 1 D-Dur »Titan«

The charismatic mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital has garnered worldwide acclaim for his ability to bridge cultural divides with his purely classical repertoire. Audiences in Weimar can look forward to his performance in concert with his Israeli compatriot Avner Dorman whose outstanding instrumental works have built him a reputation as one of the most creative composers of the younger generation.

Gustav Mahler originally titled his first symphony »Titan« –a fitting name for his first symphonic work which laid the artistic foundation of this colossal composer. Here, the music rises »like a force of nature«, combining its songlike melodies with the condensed energy of what is »distinctively Mahler« at its core. Felix Weingartner was Mahler’s Viennese successor, a lesser-known composer who learned under Liszt in Weimar and remained a close friend of the great composer all his life. His own works oscillate between late Romanticism and Classicism, but also contain a number of surprises hidden within.
