4th Symphony Concert

Conducted by Fabrice Bollon / Soloist: Thomas Müller-Pering (Guitar)

Maurice Ravel Rhapsodie espagnole
Joaquin Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez
Manuel de Falla Suite Nr. 2 aus »Der Dreispitz« (1918/19)
Claude Debussy »Ibéria« (aus »Images« pour orchestre)

If you sense something distinctly Spanish about the 4th Symphony Concert, you are not mistaken! And even if two French composers find themselves in the company of two »real« Spaniards, all four share one thing in common – their love for shimmering tonal colours and seductively swinging rhythms. Listening to their music is like listening to stories from a fascinating, unknown world – for that is how many contemporaries viewed Spain at the turn of the 20th century. The concert takes the audience on a journey from Ravel’s mysterious »Rhapsodie epagnole« to de Falla’s folkloric ballet music from the »Three-Cornered Hat« to Debussy’s orchestral triptych »Ibéria«, rife with Spanish impressions. Rodrigo’s »Concierto de Aranjuez« is the epitome of the Spanish guitar concerto – music that transports the beauty of the royal gardens at the summer palace in Aranjuez near Madrid to the concert hall. Written in 1938 during the turmoil of the Spanish civil war, such enchanting music must have demanded a great deal of artistic idealism.
