5th Symphony Concert

Conducted by Bertrand de Billy / Soloist: Johanni van Oostrum

Franz Liszt »Orpheus«. Sinfonische Dichtung Nr. 4
Ludwig van Beethoven »Ah, perfido! « Szene und Arie für Sopran und Orchester op. 65
Richard Strauss »Ein Heldenleben« op. 40

The 5th Symphony Concert presents an absolute heroic hommage! We kick off Beethoven’s 250th anniversary with an unusual and rather spectacular programme: the concert-length dramatic aria »Ah! Perfido«, which the soprano Anna Milder (Beethoven's first Leonore) originally performed in 1808 at the world premiere. Two great »Weimar composers« accompany the Bonn native from Vienna: Liszt with »Orpheus«, performed in Weimar for the first time in 1854 as the introduction to Gluck’s »Orpheus and Eurydike« (albeit completely different in style). Richard Strauss’s »A Hero’s Life« has often been criticised for its sensational self-glorification of the composer – but who can truly object to such indulgent music that radiates in brilliant orchestral tones? All the audience can do is immerse itself, take pleasure in the music and listen for Strauss’s references to Beethoven’s »Eroica«, Rossini’s »Tell« and numerous other works. And to top it off, he serves his critics their just desserts with a dash of irony ...
