6th Symphony Concert

Conducted by Stefan Lano / Soloist: Maximilian Wagner-Shibata (Tuba)

Thomas Nathan Krüger »Aber dann. Aber dann« (Uraufführung des Thüringer Komponistenpreises 2018/2019)
John Williams Konzert für Tuba und Orchester
Erich Wolfgang Korngold Sinfonie in Fis op. 40

With the world premiere of the Thuringian Composer Award, we guarantee this concert will highlight the legacy of Beethoven in the 2020 commemorative year; the prizewinner was chosen for establishing an artistic connection to the great classical composer. The programme continues with a leap »across the pond« – with a tuba concerto by the film music composer John Williams. The work places truly acrobatic demands on the soloists who not only tease their tubas to gently sing, but also have to perform jazzy routines every so often. Korngold also made a name for himself in Hollywood with his sense for dramatic turns and catchy melodies. One often forgets that before he made his debut in Hollywood, he had been a star of the classical music scene in Vienna, and after World War II, was disparaged for music that sounded »too much like Hollywood«. Nonetheless, his symphony in F-sharp major (1952) possesses enormous qualities: »an important work with original thematic substance, marked by a rare emotional force and masterful symphonic form« (Bruno Walter).
