Wagner Gala

Lonely on cloudy days // An exhilarating evening with excerpts from all 13 of Richard Wagner's music theater works

At the grand Wagner Gala, the soloists of our music theater ensemble, the Staatskapelle Weimar and the ladies of the opera choir present arias, songs and famous excerpts from Richard Wagner's oeuvre. All 13 of the composer's operas and music dramas are represented. The musical direction is in the hands of chief conductor Dominik Beykirch, who also put together the program.

With this evening, the DNT Weimar pays tribute to one of the greatest revolutionaries of musical theater, who in turn owed much to this theater himself: Wagner's works were decisively promoted and enforced at the Weimar Theater under the opera direction of court conductor Franz Liszt; his »Lohengrin« was premiered here.

»Einsam in trüben Tagen,« as Elsa von Brabant sings in this very opera, is an unusual title for an opera gala. It gives honest expression to the prevailing mood; at the same time, it is associated with the hope that the heavy and leaden time will be overcome; and be it for an intense moment through the intoxicating beauty and multifaceted power of Wagner's music, which is heard at the gala at the beginning of spring.
