The Weimar Talks 2022

»Shared Future« // Lukas Bärfuss: The assets, the debt, the waste - how to share our inheritance

»Without being asked, parents bequeath all their possessions, material and spiritual, to their children. The children must accept the bequest. The only question is: Who belongs to the family? Who is included or excluded? In the inheritance, society shows itself as it is and as it would like to be. If you want your society to be fair, you have to talk about the distribution of inheritance: politically, legally, literarily«, writes Lukas Bärfuss. He is not only one of the most important contemporary authors in Switzerland, but his plays, essays, stories and novels are also internationally renowned. His novel »Hundert Tage« (Hundred Days), which deals with the genocide in Rwanda and the role of development aid, has been translated into 15 languages.

In 2014, he received the Swiss Book Prize for »Koala«. In 2019, he was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize for his work. He has lived as a freelance writer since 1997 and teaches at various art colleges in Switzerland. He repeatedly confronts controversies about the democratic cohesion of our society and is a sharp critic of the national conservative and economic liberal policies of his home country.

The Weimar Talks 2022

With the thematic focus »Shared Future« the Weimar Speeches 2022 take up our current season motto. Based on questions about how we share, distribute and participate in social interaction, the format once again invites us to think together about how we want to live in the future? What form of prosperity do we prefer? Can prosperity of time become more desirable in the future than wealth of goods? Will we succeed in replacing overheated day-to-day business geared to short-term success with thinking and planning geared to the long term? And how are all these questions to be answered - or rather, who will answer them - in a society in which there are many people who have neither the time nor the money to devote to all this in the first place? On the three Sundays in March, the Weimar Speeches will provide impulses and drafts from different perspectives and approaches.

20% discount when purchasing tickets for all three speeches. (Valid only when purchased at the theater box office)
