5. Symphony Concert

works by Franz Schubert, Samuel Barber and Valentin Silvestrov

Franz Schubert: Sinfonie Nr. 7 h-Moll D 759 »Unvollendete«
Samuel Barber: Konzert für Violine und Orchester op. 14
Valentin Silvestrov: Sinfonie Nr. 7 (»Vollendete Unvollendete«)
Valentin Silvestrov: Violinkonzert (Uraufführung)

Two violin concertos and two symphonies converge in the 5th Symphony Concert, an impressive display of Ukrainian musical artistry featuring our Principal Conductor Kirill Karabits, acclaimed violinist Valeriy Sokolov known for his inspired performances, and Valentin Silvestrov, the »Composer in Residence« of the Staatskapelle in 2017/18. This evening Sokolov will perform two feats of violin virtuosity: Barber’s delightfully sumptuous violin concerto (with »goosebump guarantee«!) and the world premiere of a new work from Silvestrov’s multifaceted oeuvre. His seventh symphony of 2002/03, so-called »Meta Music« full of associative fluctuations, musical allusions and correspondences is contrasted by Schubert’s famous symphony in B minor. An »unfinished« work? By no means! In terms of its well-rounded form, vocal character and marvellously warm colouration, this may well be one of the most »finished«  examples of symphonic music around!
