New Years Day Concert 2018
works by Leopold Mozart, Joseph Haydn und Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Leopold Mozart: »Eine musikalische Schlittenfahrt« LMV VIII:8
Joseph Haydn: Sinfonie Hob I:100 G-Dur »Militärsinfonie«
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: »Krönungsmesse« C-Dur KV 317
As in seasons past, we wish to continue the wonderful tradition of bidding the old year goodbye and ringing in the New Year with a resounding concert. With sleigh bells jingling and horse whip snapping,
Leopold Mozart leads the way, drawing us on to two pieces which are perhaps better known by their epithets. While Joseph Haydn himself called his 100th symphony the »Military Symphony« in reference to its abundant use of the timpani, triangle and bass drum, it seems the name »Coronation Mass« was not Mozart’s invention. Originally written for Easter mass, it was one of Mozart’s first pieces as the new Salzburg court organist. It eventually earned its present name when it was performed during the coronation festivities of Emperorof Emperor Franz I of Austria. For us, it is a spectacular, crowning conclusion to our concert year with stunning solo performances by members of our opera ensemble.
