The law of the jungle

by Dominik Busch

The film director Nadja is pursuing a noble goal: She wants to make a documentary on the forced relocation of the rural inhabitants of Colombia as a result of the coal-mining operations nearby. The residents are being »escorted« away by paramilitary groups whose barbaric methods spread fear and terror throughout the region as they raze entire villages to the ground. One of the former troops is Àlvaro, who agrees to answer questions on camera. It turns out that European companies are largely behind the mining operations. And Nadja herself is convinced that her father's Swiss-based company is responsible for plundering the resources of Colombia. However, only days before the film is to be released, Àlvaro is put under pressure to retract his statement. Which puts Nadja's entire project in jeopardy. With evidence in hand to accuse her father of ethical failure, she must now decide what is more important: human responsibility or artistic mission?
In this play written for the Theater Basel in 2017, author Dominik Busch casts serious doubt on seemingly immutable balances of power. Must it always come down to the »law of the jungle« where only the fittest survive? And does this grant one a greater capacity to act?
Directed by Jan Neumann on the Studiobühne, this chamber piece impressively portrays the kind of moral vacuum that can result from such a world view.
