Identity of Europe

In the heated debates about European identity, front lines are often drawn between the pros and cons of »national statehood« on one hand and the need for a »central European government« on the other. Or calls for open borders by some and tighter borders by others. These debates not only span the continent, but also every single country. Manifestos abound, each defending one position or the other. Great Britain is about to exit the EU. Or might there be another referendum? The Italian, Polish and Hungarian relationship to the EU is on the rocks. What does the European community mean to us today? Where do we truly feel at home? In our local neighbourhoods or as cosmopolitans in Europe and the world?

Eight writers ponder these difficult questions. They let Europe speak for itself, reflect on 30 years of German unification, examine the new constellations in Europe and consider what influence theatre can have in times of great social transformation.

This joint project was initiated on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the state of Liechtenstein, located at the heart of Europe. Directed by Katrin Hilbe und Rafael David Kohn, actors from the DNT and the Theater Liechtenstein will perform eight monologues on the condition and direction of Europe.
