»Pure Schubert«

Franz Schubert
String Quartet No. 12 in C minor, D 703 (quartet movement)
String quintet in C major, D 956, op. posth. 163

Schubert's only string quintet in the instrumentation with two cellos was his chamber music swan song. Symphonic form, rapturous beauty of sound and dramatic contrasts are uniquely combined here. For all the tragedy of a man whose life's dreams did not come true, the work can still be considered one of the most beautiful-sounding of the Romantic period. The quartet movement in C minor has remained a fragment for unknown reasons, but is absolutely worth hearing even as a single piece.
